The Folly River, just inland of Stono Inlet, has recently shoaled in a couple of areas and opened up in others. Until the river is surveyed and the channel markers moved, this alternate route may help.

The first area of concern is at red nuns No. 4 and 6 where it has shoaled considerably. Staying close to the opposite side of the channel and the green cans should give you at least 7 feet of water at low tide through this area.

The rest of the channel as marked is plenty deep until you approach the last pair of channel markers, 18 and 19. At low tide, you may find yourself in as little as 3 to 4 feet between these markers. To avoid this area, take the alternate route shown which crosses the river between markers 14A and 14B. This route should keep plenty of water under your keel. This route will also take you right along the outer docks of Sunset Cay Marina, so give them a break and pass at idle speed.

These soundings were recorded with Atlantic Boat and Marine's Clara Mae, a 25' C-dory, on November 27, 2008. Depths noted for the waypoints were taken when the tide was at mean low. Keep in mind this area is constantly changing. If you have not been through here in a while, do yourself a favor and take it slow.

We will be updating these soundings as time allows. In the mean time, call us if you have questions or have more current information to offer.
