Captain Favorite Crews in Gunboat Shootout

Atlantic Boat and Marine's Captain Merab Favorite has spent most of the month of March in the Eastern Caribbean. She took the opportunity to crew in the Gunboat class at the Heineken Regatta in St Maarten.

Gunboat sailing cats are high performance carbon fiber built cruisers with models ranging from 48 to 90 feet. They can easily make 300 miles per day and routinely reach speeds in excess of 20 knots.

The St Maarten Heineken Regatta included four days of marathon sailing around the island and within the Anguilla Channel. The Regatta was organized by the Sint Maarten Yacht Club and was governed by the rules as defined in the ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing. Eligible classes included Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker, Bareboat, Multihull, Beach Cats, and an Open Class.

The island of St.-Martin/St. Maarten which is about 300 miles east of Puerto Rico, is billed as the smallest country in the world divided between two sovereign powers, France to the north and the Netherlands Antilles (Dutch) to the south. The island being only 37 square miles, the Dutch and the French decided against any commercial restrictions between the two some 350 years ago. Residents enjoy a peaceful coexistence and have easy access to either side, making the arrangement between the two nations one of the world's most successful and long standing treaties in history.

Captain Favorite is planning to return to the states sometime in April or May.
